Last Friday night, Lions gathered for a North Dakota Kentucky Derby Party to celebrate my candidacy for International Director and to provide support for our campaign to receive the endorsement of Lions from Multiple District 5. What a great event!
The organizers were PDG Kevin Vannett and PDG Mel Olson. Within a month, they brought together other Lions from across the Multiple District to sponsor the naming of horses, the purchase of ads, the amassing of prizes, the sale of tickets, and the making of all the local arrangements to assure that everyone would have a great time…and we did!
Getting into the spirit of the Kentucky Derby was fun! You can see that I got into more that the “spirit” as the jockey in me came out in full force and I encouraged those who attended to place their bets on winning horses throughout the evening. The silent auction and other fun activities kept the crowd mingling and enjoying each other’s company.
The NDSU Campus Lions Club assisted by providing workers to staff the different activities associated with the races. They even had a chance to sell the remaining tickets in their meat raffle to raise funds for LCIF! Talk about winners! This group of young Lions has really energized the Fargo Lions Club by working together on projects throughout the year. The current club president, Lion Shane Hofer (second from left standing) is graduating and will be transferring his membership to the Fargo Club. Recently, charter president Lion Kyle Sebesta has transferred his membership to the Bismarck Capital City Lions Club. Encouraging young Lions to continue their association after graduation is an important way to bring new ideas into existing clubs.
Kathy and I are so appreciative of all the work and effort that went into this Kentucky Derby fundraiser. We are committed to being the kind of International Director who can represent the Lions of our region with distinction on the Board of Directors. We will be prepared to work hard to serve the Lions of the world and you can be sure that we will have fun doing it! The race continues but Kathy and I know that we have the commitment to see it through to a successful finish!
