Noel Mason, Division Manager for Member Operations & Support, Lions International
In the following excerpt from the book, Resilience and Renewal: The Story of Lions International and the Crisis of COVID-19–published at the fifth anniversary of the onset of the pandemic that shut down the world–Noel Mason, described how stories of Lions serving during the pandemic inspired him and his co-workers. Noel Mason was just one of over 300 at the Oak Brook (Illinois) headquarters who provided services and support for Lions Clubs during the pandemic. He reveals the inspiration he felt in the comment below:
“As we were hearing about how Lions were continuing to find ways to serve and help their communities, it was very inspiring, as was knowing that Lions were willing to risk their own health to be able to benefit others. Lions adapted their service to meet needs. For example, they found ways to transport Lions who needed medical attention, and they purchased ventilators and things to help their communities. All of us at headquarters found the stories of Lions to be motivational as we tried to be as responsive as possible to their requests for information and support” (p. 6).
In a review of Resilience and Renewal for The Pacific Book Review, staff writer Liz Konkel noted the value of having personal stories like Noel’s included as part of the record of how Lions International survived the crisis of COVID-19:
“A key aspect discussed throughout is creativity, which Littlefield highlights as a necessary component for thinking outside the box when external factors become a challenge. This helps the book become a resource to help others avoid the same mistakes and achieve the same successes. Personal accounts are incorporated . . . that provide positive feedback and commentary about the organization. This creates a more human touch by showing Lions as an important figure that aids with communities and welfare by showing that the organization stands by its mission statement to care about people. These feel genuine and heartfelt, encouraging you to feel the same fondness that Littlefield has for the organization. Resilience and Renewal is more than about an organization surviving COVID, but a story of hope, determination, creativity, and surviving against the odds. This book reminds us that when everything changes, service endures.”
